Bream Fishing Tips

Bream Fishing Spots in Victoria

By Bob Ives

It's no secret that Australian bream fishing is the rage, and the bream are bigger an better there than most anywhere else (sorry, Texas). There are a lot of great places to fish for bream in Australian, but many Aussie anglers will agree that the southern bream fishing is king over the northern. One of the bream hot spots in Australia is in Victoria.

Victoria is a highly populated state along the coast in southeast Australia. It's moderate climate due to being on the coast makes it good fishing weather year round.

It's hard not to find good bream fishing locations in Victoria because of it's relationship to the coast and the many docks there are to fish from. Some bream fishermen like to fish the Melbourne Docklands where they claim there is no need to cast. They just drop the bait down through the pylons and let it sink down. This would be helpful on windy days. Melbourne Docklands is the coastal area in Melbourne, Australia.

Also, fishing along the Yarra is productive down to the Bolte Bridge which crosses the Yarra River. Under the Bolte Bridge is good on the northern side of the Docklands area and near the mouth of the Moonee Ponds creek and around the moored boats on Lorimer Street.

Here are some other options for you to check out that might be near you:

The Patterson River west of the flood gates is supposedly worth checking out in the early morning for bream

Look for black bream in the Glenelg and Hopkins Rivers in autumn and late spring

Try Gippsland Lakes Coastal Parks for surf fishing or lake fishing via boat, bank or jetty

There are also a lot of fishing parks near Melbourne. Some are great for bream, some are better for other species. But all provide good fishing of some sort:

Port Phillip Bay: coastline, sandy beaches, piers and jetties. Includes piers at Middle Park, Mordialloc, Mornington, Rye, Sorrento, Geelong, Altona and Williamstown

Morninton Peninsula National Park: coastline from Portsea to cape Schanck. Good for shore fishing. Try London Bridge and Gunnamatta, Bellarine Peninsula: St Leonard's Pier close to Melbourne that provides good fishing

Other good fishing spots across Victoria:

Murray River Parks and Reserves: great fishing. Try creeks, lakes and rivers of the Murray River system.

If Australian bream fishing is your thing, a trip to Victoria may scratch that itch for you. This is certainly not an all inclusive list of bream fishing locations in Victoria, but it's a good start. Local fishermen and tackle shops can surely inform you about all the little known hot spots.
